Tours and boat trips in Qeshm: which tour to take?

Qeshm is Iran's largest island and part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. Here you can get to know the sights and the kinds of tours on offer, and work out which plan suits your trip. MyQeshm does not sell tours itself; booking and comparison happen on QeshmOff.

Main attractions in Qeshm

Most of Qeshm's attractions are natural or geological and are spread across the island, so most visitors pick two or three areas for a single day.

  • Chahkuh Canyon

Tall, eroded rock walls shaped by wind and water, with a short walking route between them. A quiet visit that suits photography.

  • Stars Valley

An area of striking, unusual rock formations that local belief links to a fallen star. It is most pleasant in the cooler hours of the day.

  • Hara (mangrove) forest

Mangrove forests grow in the shallow waters beside the island and shelter birds and marine life. Visits are usually by boat and depend on the tide.

  • Namakdan salt cave

One of the world's well-known salt caves, with crystalline shapes and salt columns. Entry is usually with a guide and under the cave's protection rules.

  • Naz Island

A small island near the Qeshm coast, reached by boat, with a calm sea and beach atmosphere.

  • Hengam Island and dolphins

Hengam lies south of Qeshm and has quiet beaches. Dolphins are sometimes seen in the surrounding waters, but a sighting is never guaranteed.

  • Laft village and windcatchers

Laft has an old quarter with houses topped by windcatchers, a traditional way of cooling buildings in hot weather. A visit is mostly cultural and on foot.

  • Valleys and natural statues

In several places erosion has carved rocks into statue-like shapes. They show why Qeshm is called a geology museum.

  • Beaches and sunset

The island's beaches vary from rocky to sandy. Sunset and the last hours of the day are the best time to see them.

Types of tours and excursions

Tours usually come in a few standard formats. Choose by length of stay, who is travelling and what you enjoy, and ask the operator for details.

  • One-day island tour by van

Several main sights in one day by van with a guide. Good if you are short on time and do not want to plan the route yourself.

Best time to visit

  • The cooler seasons are easier for walking and for visiting canyons and valleys. In summer, plan visits for early morning or close to sunset.
  • For the Hara forest the tide matters. The boat route and visiting time change with it, so ask the operator for that day's plan.
  • Boat trips depend on sea and wind conditions and may be cancelled or moved on a bad-weather day.
  • During busy periods (holidays and Nowruz) tours fill up sooner, so booking earlier is usually better.

Visitor etiquette and safety

  • Qeshm is a UNESCO Global Geopark. Do not take rocks, salt, shells or plants, and do not climb on natural formations.
  • Take your rubbish with you, especially in the mangroves, on beaches and in caves.
  • Do not approach, chase or feed dolphins.
  • Wear a life jacket on boats and take the captain's instructions seriously.
  • Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and suitable shoes; some places have no shade.
  • Stay with the guide in caves and canyons and do not leave the marked routes.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough to see Qeshm?

Two to three days is usually enough for the main sights, and one day lets you see only a few. If you also want the sea, the mangroves and the villages, stay longer.

Should I join a tour or use my own car?

A tour takes care of planning, a guide and transport, while your own or a rented car gives more freedom. The sights are spread out, so many travellers combine both.

Are the tours suitable for children?

Most plans are family-friendly, but walking routes or boats may not suit very young children. Tell the operator the children's ages when booking.

Where do boats to Hengam leave from?

Trips to Hengam usually go by boat from a pier in Qeshm, and this varies with the operator and the sea. Ask about the departure point and plan when booking.

Which season is best for a trip?

The cooler seasons are easier for excursions and walking. Summer is hot, so move your plans to the cooler hours.

Do the attractions have entrance tickets?

Some places charge an entrance fee and others do not, and conditions sometimes change. Ask the operator or QeshmOff for the current situation.

Does MyQeshm sell tours?

No. MyQeshm is a guide and sends you to QeshmOff; booking and arrangements are made with the operator.
