Hengam Island (Jazireh-ye Hengam)

Hengam is a small, quiet island in the Persian Gulf, just across the water from the south coast of Qeshm. People come for the dolphins, the glittering Silver Beach and a slice of island village life. You can only get there by boat, which gives every trip a small sense of adventure.

Type: Islands · Area: Hengam Island

Where is Hengam?

Hengam lies south of Qeshm in Hormozgan Province. According to Wikipedia it is only about two kilometres from Qeshm's coast, and administratively it belongs to Qeshm County. The island is often described as shaped like a truncated cone, and its highest point, Nakas mountain, rises to roughly 106 metres.

The population is small: the 2016 census recorded about 521 residents. That low density keeps the atmosphere calm and very different from the busier coastal towns.

Dolphins and the surrounding sea

Dolphins are the main reason visitors come. They are seen from time to time in the waters near the island, and boat trips head out to look for them. A sighting can never be promised; it depends on the season, the time of day, sea conditions and luck, so treat it as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins have been photographed around Hengam. Local boatmen usually know where sightings are likelier, but keeping a respectful distance from the animals protects both them and your boat.

The Silver Beach and what to see

The Silver Beach is named for the shimmer that certain bright minerals give to the sand in sunlight. It is a place to walk, take photographs and sit by the sea. Some sources also mention that in certain seasons the water glows blue at night because of phytoplankton; this is not constant, so do not plan around it.

A white cylindrical lighthouse, about 12 metres tall and solar powered, stands on the island. If a small local market or handicraft stall is open in the village you can stop by, but do not assume it will be.

A short history

Because of its position near the Strait of Hormuz, Hengam drew the attention of several powers. Sources say the Portuguese held it in the Safavid era and the British in the Qajar era, while local sheikhs and the Sultan of Muscat also laid claim to it.

In 1928 (1307 in the Iranian calendar) Iran sent forces to assert sovereignty, and British forces left in 1932. The story shows how strategic this tiny island has been.

Getting on the water

Boats run between the island and the Shib Deraz and Kandalu piers on Qeshm. Shib Deraz is the closest point and the main gateway for visitors. Exact departure times vary with season and sea conditions, so confirm before you go. You can book Hengam tours and boats on Qeshmoff.

How to get there

Drive from Qeshm city or Dargahan to the Shib Deraz pier, the closest point to the island.

Take a boat from Shib Deraz (or Kandalu) to Hengam. Ask the boatman about duration and price before departing.

If you have no car, book a transfer and a day tour on Qeshmoff so everything is arranged in one place.

Best time to visit

The cooler months, roughly autumn to early spring, are better for walking on the beach and boat rides; summer is very hot.

Early morning and late afternoon give softer light for photos and milder temperatures.

There is no fixed hour for dolphins; calmer seas generally improve the odds.

On windy days boats may not sail, so keep your plans flexible.

Visiting tips

  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; shade on the beach is limited.
  • Carry enough water and snacks, and take your rubbish back with you.
  • Wear the life jacket on board and do not crowd the dolphins.
  • This is a local village: dress modestly and ask before photographing people.
  • Water shoes or sturdy sandals are more comfortable on the shore.
