Chahkooh Canyon (Tang-e Chahkooh)

Chahkooh Canyon is a narrow passage between rock walls in the western part of Qeshm Island, near Chahu village. Though short, walking between its high walls is among the island's most striking nature experiences.

Type: Nature and geology · Area: West of the island

What is Chahkooh?

Chahkooh is a rock gorge that water and wind have cut into the island's soft rock over time. Its walls close in on both sides of the path like a corridor.

It is a known attraction of the Qeshm Global Geopark and sits on the nature-tour route in the west of the island.

Why does it look like a canyon?

Qeshm's sedimentary rocks are soft and layered, and rainwater runoff wears them down over the years. The result is narrow passages with vertical walls where sunlight reaches the floor for only part of the day.

The patterns and colours of the layers are best seen in low sunlight, so morning and late afternoon are more rewarding.

The walk

The route inside is short and simple, but the floor can be uneven, rocky or sandy. In places the corridor narrows so that two people barely pass side by side.

Most visitors combine a quiet walk with a short photo stop. If you travel with children or older relatives, ask the guide about the condition of the path.

Chahu village and local culture

The gorge is near the village of Chahu, a small settlement; visit with respect for residents' privacy and calm.

Ask permission before photographing people or homes, and buy from local stalls if you want souvenirs.

What to pair it with

Chahkooh is often part of a geopark day with Namakdan Cave and Stars Valley, which together show the variety of Qeshm's geology.

How to get there

The canyon is in the west of Qeshm Island near Chahu village, reached by car from the main road and then a side track.

For ease, join a geopark tour or book a return transfer on Qeshmoff.

Ask a local guide for the exact entrance, as the side track has few signs.

Best time to visit

The cool season, autumn to early spring, is better for walking.

Early morning and late afternoon avoid heat and the low light shows the wall colours best.

Postpone after heavy rain; narrow passages can become slippery or dangerous.

Visiting tips

  • Wear proper walking shoes and carry enough water.
  • Do not climb the walls, remove material from them, or write on the rocks.
  • Take your rubbish back; the canyon is part of a geopark.
  • Respect the calm of Chahu village and its residents.
  • Avoid the hottest hours and use a hat and sunscreen.
