Stars Valley (Darreh-ye Setaregan)

Stars Valley is one of the best-known geosites of the Qeshm UNESCO Global Geopark: a maze of pillars, sharp ridges and narrow channels carved by rainwater out of soft rock. It lies in the south-east of the island, north of Barkeh Khalaf village, and locals tell a story of a fallen star about it.

Type: Nature and geology · Area: South of the island

Where is Stars Valley?

Stars Valley lies in the south-east of Qeshm Island, north of the village of Barkeh Khalaf. It is a part of the Qeshm Global Geopark and is protected as geological heritage.

UNESCO recognised Qeshm in 2017 as the first global geopark in the Middle East, and the valley is one of the sites under that umbrella. Visits should therefore follow nature-protection rules.

Geology: how did it form?

The sedimentary rocks here belong to the Aghajari Formation and date to the Miocene epoch. Their layers contain fossilised shells and corals, remnants of ancient seas.

The valley's present shape, with its pillars, sharp peaks and narrow channels, developed over the last tens of thousands of years. The main cause is rainwater runoff, which wears away soft and hard layers at different rates and leaves these dramatic forms.

The fallen star legend

The local name is «Estele Kofte», translated as fallen star. Local tradition links the strange landforms to a star that fell to earth.

This is a folk story, not a scientific explanation; geologically the shapes come from erosion and rock hardness. Hearing both versions from a local guide is part of the visit.

What you will see

The walk winds between earthen and stone walls and columns, and each bend opens a new view. Morning and late-afternoon light changes the colours of the layers and suits photography best.

The valley is exposed to the sun with little shade. Many visitors prefer the hours around sunset for the colours.

Combining it with other sites

Stars Valley is usually part of a day on the south and centre of the island together with other geopark sites. Chahkooh Canyon and Namakdan Salt Cave are natural companions in a nature-focused plan.

If you have time, leave a few hours for the village and local culture. You can compare geopark tours on Qeshmoff.

How to get there

Stars Valley is in the south-east of Qeshm, above Barkeh Khalaf village, reached by car from the main island road and then side roads.

Without your own car, the easiest way is a geopark tour or a return transfer; both can be booked on Qeshmoff.

Use local landmarks and a tour guide at the entrance; side tracks are easy to lose without one.

Best time to visit

The cool season, roughly autumn to early spring, is best for walking; midday in summer is hard because of heat and no shade.

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended for comfort and for better photography light.

Postpone entering the channels after heavy rain, as the ground becomes slippery and unsafe.

Visiting tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes for soil and rock and carry enough water.
  • The valley is part of a geopark: do not climb the walls, take rocks or fossils, or write on the pillars.
  • Take your rubbish with you and respect the quiet of the nearby village.
  • Use a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses; shade is scarce.
  • Ask about local rules before flying a drone or using professional gear.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Stars Valley on Qeshm?

In the south-east of the island, north of Barkeh Khalaf village, within the Qeshm Global Geopark.

Why is it called Stars Valley?

The local name «Estele Kofte» means fallen star. Local lore ties the odd shapes to a falling star, but scientifically they result from erosion.

How did the valley form?

The rocks belong to the Miocene Aghajari Formation. Over the last tens of thousands of years, rainwater runoff has worn soft layers faster than hard ones, creating pillars and channels.

When is the best time to visit?

The cool season, and morning or late afternoon hours. Summer midday heat with little shade makes it difficult.

How can I book a tour or transfer?

Book a geopark tour or a return transfer on Qeshmoff, where you can see availability and prices.
